ASLAN — Des lévriers, une seconde chance

Les abandonnés des chenils … à Tempe en Arizona

🇬🇧 This article is also available in English — read it here.

The abandoned dogs in shelters… in Tempe, Arizona

This year too, I decided to visit an animal shelter in the United States to give them the money I had raised through my jobs and professional photo shoots (which just goes to show that I really don’t mind posing in a swimsuit if it helps save animals — just saying!).

Often, these organisations have no income other than donations, so their resources are very limited, especially when you consider that veterinary costs can be between five and ten times higher than in Europe.

A few weeks ago, I decided to go to Pet Smart (a pet food and supplies shop) in Tempe, where an adoption day was being held. In the United States, rescue organisations are allowed to organise events in pet shops to find new owners for animals. It was an opportunity for me to form an impression, observe the people in charge and assess what they told me before subsequently visiting their shelter, supposedly with a possible adoption in mind, when in reality I intended to make a cash donation.

My heart immediately broke when I saw this puppy being offered for adoption by Paw Kindness Animal Rescue and Sanctuary. He was so frightened that he barely dared to move and was trembling so much that I asked if I could hold him in my arms to reassure him. The organisation told me his story, which was as sad as that of most of the dogs there.

How is it possible not to be moved by this little creature who asks for nothing more than a home where he will be protected and loved?

The puppies were four in all, each more endearing than the last. Jinkies was the only one who stayed at the back of the cage, trying to avoid any eye contact and hoping that nobody would come near him.

After talking to the person in charge, I learnt that their mother had been found wandering and emaciated on a motorway. She had been picked up by a lorry driver and then taken to the shelter, where they discovered that she was pregnant. Had she been taken to a ‘kill shelter’, she would have been euthanised.

I quickly made my decision: this organisation was my choice. You will hear more about it soon. I have set up a new project to help with adoptions.
